If you run a 2009β2018 UK Sprinter β or an early VS30 up to about 2020 β there’s a good chance your van has the OM651 2.1-litre four-cylinder diesel. It’s an engine North America never got, which means most of the advice you’ll find on American Sprinter forums simply doesn’t apply to your van. And the OM651 has one headline weakness every UK owner should understand: timing chain stretch. Caught early, it’s a manageable one-day repair. Ignored, it can destroy the engine.
Why the OM651 Chain Stretches
Mercedes made two design choices on the OM651 that matter here. First, the timing chain is a simplex (single-row) chain β a lighter, cheaper design than the duplex chains Mercedes had used for decades. Second, it’s mounted at the rear of the engine, against the flywheel, which makes access a major job. The cams are driven via a gear-driven intermediate shaft with a short chain above it, so wear in either interface throws the cam-to-crank relationship out.
The chain itself isn’t the only wear item. The plastic tensioner guides crack and disintegrate with heat and oil contamination, and a worn tensioner lets the chain flail on cold starts before oil pressure builds. Mercedes revised the guides with metal reinforcement on later engines and released an updated tensioner in late 2014 β the current genuine part is A6510500800. Tellingly, when Mercedes replaced the OM651 with the OM654, the new engine got a duplex chain.
Which Years Are Worst
Pre-2011 builds carry the highest risk β they have the earliest guides and the original tensioner. But stretch is reported across the whole OM651 era, typically appearing somewhere between roughly 75,000 and 120,000 miles depending on oil-change discipline and duty cycle. Urban stop-start use (couriers, multi-drop, short camper trips) wears chains faster than steady motorway miles.
The Symptom Progression
- Cold-start rattle for 10β20 seconds. A distinctive “clack-clack-clack” from the rear of the engine on the first start of the day that fades as oil pressure builds. This is the earliest and most important warning β at this stage you’re buying a tensioner and chain kit, not an engine.
- Load-change clatter and rough cold idle. As stretch progresses, you’ll hear rattle on throttle transitions, and the cold idle gets lumpy.
- Fault codes P0016 / P0017 β crankshaft-to-camshaft correlation, Bank 1 sensors A and B. If both appear together, the base timing itself has moved: that’s a stretched chain or jumped tooth, not a bad sensor. On a Mercedes STAR/XENTRY system you may see suffixed versions such as P001785.
- Long cranking or a no-start. By this stage the timing is far enough out that the ECU struggles to synchronise cam and crank signals. Stop driving the van.
How a Garage Confirms It
A Mercedes-capable diagnostic system (XENTRY/STAR, or a high-end aftermarket tool) reads the live camshaft-position deviation against the crank. Deviation beyond spec confirms stretch without opening the engine. Mercedes also publishes a physical elongation measurement using a special measuring tensioner β beyond a threshold, the whole chain and gear set must be replaced rather than just the tensioner. A generic OBD reader can show you P0016/P0017, but it can’t measure deviation β this is a job for a Sprinter specialist or a dealer.
What a Chain Kit Costs in the UK
A full kit is the chain, tensioner, guide rails, and the sprockets/gears β UK specialists strongly recommend genuine Mercedes parts here, because a cheap chain in a known-weak system is false economy. Mercedes book time is around 8.5 hours; the engine stays in the van, but there’s extensive ancillary removal at the flywheel end.
- Independent Mercedes specialist: from around £700 for a chain-and-tensioner job, up to roughly £1,000β£1,300 all-in for a full kit with genuine parts β typically a one-day job.
- Mercedes dealer: commonly £2,300β£3,000. Some dealers quote higher still if they price the job as an engine-out.
Compare that to the alternative below and the maths is simple: the rattle stage is the cheap stage.
What Happens If You Ignore It
The OM651 is an interference engine. If a badly stretched chain jumps teeth or lets go, the valves meet the pistons. Best case is bent valves and a cylinder-head rebuild; worst case is damaged pistons, rods, or a cracked head β at which point you’re shopping for a replacement engine, and documented cases exist of OM651s dying this way at relatively modest mileages. There is no version of this failure that costs less than fixing the chain when it first rattled.
Did Mercedes Fix It? The OM654
Largely, yes. The OM654 2.0-litre that replaced the OM651 in UK Sprinters from around mid-2020 uses a duplex (double-row) chain, and chain problems on it are far rarer. It’s still rear-mounted β so a replacement, if ever needed, remains labour-heavy β but the design weakness was addressed. If you’re buying a newer UK Sprinter and want to opt out of this problem entirely, the OM654 era is the line to cross.
How to Make an OM651 Chain Last
- Use the right oil: low-SAPS 5W-30 meeting MB 229.51 or 229.52. It protects the DPF and keeps the chain and guides in clean oil. The sump takes roughly 7β8 litres β budget for proper fills, not top-up economics.
- Shorten the drain interval: around 10,000 miles for normal use, 7,000β8,000 for urban stop-start or heavily loaded camper duty. Long ASSYST-stretched intervals on dirty oil are the single biggest owner-controllable wear factor.
- Act on the first rattle. A cold-start rattle investigated the week it appears is a tensioner-and-chain job. The same rattle ignored for a year is a gamble with an interference engine.
- Buy on history: on any used OM651 van, documented oil changes and (ideally) evidence of chain or tensioner work are worth more than a shiny cab. Every van’s MOT history is free to check at gov.uk β pair it with the service file.
What This Means for UK Camper Buyers
A huge share of UK self-build campers and panel-van conversions sit on 2010β2018 Sprinters β prime OM651 territory. None of this makes them bad vans: the engine is efficient, parts are everywhere, and the failure mode announces itself loudly and early. It just means the pre-purchase checklist for a UK Sprinter camper should start with a cold start (listen for the rattle), a scan for P0016/P0017, and a question about oil-change history β before you fall in love with the interior.
