The Winnebago Era shares its chassis with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, which means recalls come from two sources: Winnebago itself (for the coach body, systems, and components they installed) and Mercedes-Benz (for the base vehicle โ engine, brakes, steering, safety systems). Your Era may have open recalls from either or both manufacturers.
This guide covers every significant recall affecting the Era from 2012 through 2025. To check your specific VIN, use the NHTSA VIN lookup tool at nhtsa.gov/recalls โ enter your 17-digit VIN and you’ll see every open campaign that applies to your exact vehicle.
How Era Recalls Work
When a recall affects your Era, you’ll typically receive a letter from both Winnebago and Mercedes-Benz separately. The Winnebago recall covers anything from the B-pillar back โ the coach body, electrical systems, appliances, and habitation equipment. The Mercedes recall covers the chassis forward โ engine, transmission, brakes, airbags, and safety systems.
Both repairs are free. Winnebago recalls are handled at authorized Winnebago dealers. Mercedes chassis recalls are handled at any Mercedes-Benz commercial van dealer or authorized Sprinter service center.
Winnebago Coach Recalls โ Era Specific
Carefree Awning Motor Failure (2016โ2022)
NHTSA Campaign: Multiple campaigns affecting 2016โ2022 model years
What fails: The Carefree of Colorado awning can deploy unexpectedly while driving or fail to retract fully. In some cases the motor overheats and can cause a fire in the awning housing.
Fix: Winnebago replaces the awning motor and installs an updated control module with overheat protection. On severely affected units, the full awning assembly is replaced.
Note: This is one of the most common open recalls on used Eras. Always check VIN before buying a used unit.
Shore Power Inlet Corrosion (2015โ2021)
What fails: The 30-amp shore power inlet connector corrodes internally, causing high resistance at the connection. This generates heat that can melt the inlet housing or start an electrical fire in the sidewall.
Symptoms: Warm or discolored shore power cord after plugging in, breaker trips at campground pedestal, burning smell near the inlet.
Fix: Winnebago replaces the inlet connector assembly with an updated corrosion-resistant unit and inspects the wiring harness behind the wall.
Flex Bed Locking Mechanism (2016โ2019)
What fails: The Flex Bed system โ the fold-out rear bed platform โ can fail to lock in the fully deployed position. If the latch doesn’t engage, the bed can fold unexpectedly while someone is sleeping on it.
Fix: Winnebago replaces the latch mechanism with an updated design that includes a secondary retention feature and a visual indicator showing confirmed lock engagement.
LP Gas Regulator Venting (2019โ2022)
What fails: The LP gas regulator vent location on some Era units does not meet NFPA requirements for vent positioning relative to potential ignition sources. In a rare scenario, escaping LP gas could reach a heat source.
Fix: Winnebago relocates the regulator vent or installs a vent extension kit to ensure proper clearance per code.
Mercedes-Benz Chassis Recalls โ VS30 Era (2019โ2025)
Parking Pawl / Rollaway Risk (2019โ2021) โ CRITICAL
NHTSA Campaign: 20V-485 and related
What fails: The transmission parking pawl may not fully engage when the shifter is moved to Park. The vehicle can roll away with the shifter in Park position, creating a serious safety hazard.
This is one of the most serious recalls ever issued for the Sprinter. Multiple incidents of rollaways have been reported.
Fix: Mercedes-Benz reprograms the transmission control module and in some cases replaces the parking pawl mechanism.
Action required: If you own a 2019โ2021 Era and haven’t had this recall completed, make this your top priority. Check NHTSA VIN lookup immediately.
HVAC Blower Motor Fire Risk (2019โ2023)
What fails: The HVAC blower motor resistor can overheat and in rare cases cause a fire in the dashboard area. Symptoms include the blower only working on high speed, a burning smell from the vents, or the blower motor running continuously after the ignition is off.
Fix: Mercedes-Benz replaces the blower motor resistor and inspects the surrounding wiring harness.
Smart Alternator / Battery Drain (2019โ2022)
What fails: The VS30 smart alternator system can, under certain conditions, fail to maintain chassis battery voltage. This is more of a service bulletin (TSB) than a safety recall, but it has been escalated to recall status in some markets.
Impact on Era owners: Particularly significant because the smart alternator is also the primary charging source for the Lithionics coach battery system via the DC-DC charger. An alternator fault can leave you with both a dead chassis battery and a depleted house battery.
Fix: Software update to the battery management system and in some cases alternator replacement.
NCV3 Era (2012โ2018) โ Key Chassis Recalls
The NCV3 Sprinter chassis used through 2018 has its own recall history, mostly involving:
- Fuel pump failure โ OM642 diesel high-pressure fuel pump wear causing hard starts or no-start
- Power steering corrosion โ steering gear corrosion causing loss of power assist
- Airbag inflator โ Takata airbag recall affecting certain 2007โ2017 model years
- Glow plug controller โ glow plug module overheating causing difficulty starting in cold weather
How to Check Your VIN Right Now
- Go to nhtsa.gov/recalls
- Enter your 17-digit VIN (found on driver’s door jamb sticker or dashboard)
- View all open recalls โ both Winnebago and Mercedes campaigns will appear
- Contact your nearest Winnebago dealer for coach recalls and a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter dealer for chassis recalls
- All recall repairs are free of charge regardless of mileage or ownership history
If you’re buying a used Era, run the VIN before you finalize the purchase. An open recall isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker, but you should know what’s open and factor in the time to get repairs completed.
